Week 15 update - Another goal, but lots of fatigue!

The good news is that another goal has been crossed off, and it was a hard one!  The bad news is that I’ve fallen completely off the reservation and many of the other goals have suffered over the past month.  So – we’ll get moving on those.

As for the goal that was obtained, I managed to cover over 40 km in under an hour!  When I set this goal, it felt more than a bit outlandish and I didn’t think it was realistic to try for this.  However, after getting the aerodynamic bicycle, it put it within striking distance and then with some final pushes through training, it was close.

My father had agreed to come into town for the even that was scheduled for April 26.  As I told him, the time will be somewhere between 58 and 62 minutes.  It was going to be close.  Unfortunately, as the day of the event got closer, the weather forecast got worse and it looked like rain was in the plans.  I was ready to make a go of it, whatever the weather, but the event coordinators didn’t agree and decided to cancel the event.  So, the morning of the 26th, I spent some time on Strava and found a new course.  12.5 miles of uninterrupted, low-trafficked, flat roads.  Combined with the forecast for 80 degrees and mild winds, I couldn’t have asked for better.

At lunch, my dad and I piled into the van and headed east toward Ammon, NC.  We stopped at the educational forest out there and I started the warm up.  30 minutes later, it was go time.

The first 5 minutes went well.  In an effort to control myself from going out too hard early, I had programmed my computer to give me nothing but tie and heart rate.  After 5 minutes, I switched screens and was excited to see an average speed for those 5 mins of 42 km/hr.  This speed largely continued for the next 20 minutes when I encountered a tractor.  I sped around it and then went back to the 42 km/hr speed.  I knew I had a mild tailwind so it would be important to put a little time in the bank.  At 29 minutes, I reached the turnaround.

From there, things got a little harder.  I had the average speed on the computer and it seemed like every time I glanced down, the average speed dropped another 0.1 km/hr.  There weren’t many more to give up.  Crossing through the 30 km mark though, I realized that I only needed to average 35 km/hr for the last 10km.  This would still be tough, but would be manageable – especially since there was one small downhill remaining.

With 2 km to go, it was clear I would make it.  The legs were screaming, but the speed stayed on.  I crossed past the original start mark at 59:25 and let the muscles relax.  There was a lot of soreness, but it’s an accomplishment, I’m proud of achieving.

That said, I don’t think I’ll try it again.  If you want the details, they’re below

As for the other goals….

Physical

           #2 - COMPLETE!!!!!
#5 –1,204 miles – The last few weeks have been light on mileage, but it does include the 40km time trial!  Time to start training for the mountains.
#6 – 3,925.  Missed a few days or I would be through 4,000.  Amazing how quickly these add up.

Mental
#14 – Delivering Happiness – the story of Tony Hsieh and Zappos.  Amazing story of commitment to a dream and the development of a healthy company culture.  Cool story
#15 - Found another new podcast I think I'll enjoy - "Work Life with Adam Grant"  Tells the story of
            #16 – 17  Add one more

Relationship
#21 With spring here, we've been getting out a bit more frequently.  We're now up to 9.
#22 - Up to 12, including war with Robinson - his rules.  I'm not going to win this any time soon.  I also played Stratego which was good until Sebastian lost and now he doesn't want to play anymore.
#26 – Passed 200 on the year.  This one is in good shape

Environmental
#27 – Currently at 9.5 lbs for the year. Garbage really is everywhere.  It's pretty sad.  There's not much left in the neighborhood though.  I did get a WONDERFUL gift this week as my good friend Jeff (an AMAZING person) told me he's been picking up garbage around the country as he travels as my birthday gift.  It's so nice!
#30 - 5.5 lbs of meat on the year.  I'm missing some of it and think with the exercise, I need to figure out protein so this might go up as the year goes on.
#31 – I still can't believe how infrequently I shop.  I'm up to 17 shopping trips, but that's almost all of the shopping I've done!
#34 - With the warmer weather, drying laundry has become more plausible.  Up to 3 loads dried outside.

Miscellaneous
#35 - This is the 12th post on the 15th week.  I think we're on pace here.
#36 - I've only cleaned the bathrooms 9 times.  Really need to get this moving
#37 - 3 hours of cleaning/organizing.  I'm wondering if one of the hours counts because I feel like I messed it up almost immediately
#38 – Up to 11 here and hoping for more as we travel this weekend to Virginia.  I added Rol N Donuts in Lockport, IL.  Not too shabby.
#41/42 - Been adding a few things to the bucket list and have also gotten a few of the "phone free" moments in.  Both are currently at 3.
#44 - Second donation complete for a total of 32 oz.  I just need one more donation to make the goal.
